I'm teaching a new course this period. It's a CLIL course together with Biology. I thought it starts next week, but no! It starts tomorrow. Oops? Lucky me, lesson one is sort of easy to pull out of thin air.

Listen, flist. I want to make my students read some sci-fi. Hit me with recommendations of good/classic science fiction short stories in English that are available for free online. I've got The Veldt by Ray Bradbury first on my list, but what else? I'd like to make them read Gibson (for no other reason that I like Gibson, to be honest, but I don't have to tell them that) but availability is an issue.

January Journal questions:

24. What's the worst job you ever had? /[personal profile] machinistm

Oh, this one is easy. I was a telemarketer for the first year after I moved to Turku and out of my parents' house. I hadn't gotten into University on my first try (entry into Finnish universities is exclusively by entrance exam), but I didn't want to spend a year at home doing nothing. I wanted to Be an Adult and Live My Own Life. Up until then, my only job had been working during harvest with my parents. Working the harvest includes 12-hour days of physical labour in hot barns while being stung by various insects and itching from the dust and hay. It's grueling, unpredictable, stressful and uncomfortable. I don't like physical labour at all. But I would make it my freaking career at the drop of a hat, rather than ever have to work in telemarketing ever again.

25. Favorite time of day and why?
/[personal profile] matopa

Somewhere between 9 am and noon. It's light outside, and the day is still full of potential. It's when I'm at my smartest, I find.

26. What book(s) are you reading right now
? /[personal profile] siljamus

Metsän äiti (Mother of the Forest) by Anne Leinonen. It's a liminal fantasy novel, and I love it to pieces. When/if translated to English at some point, I urge everyone to pick it up.

The Captive Prince by C.S Pacat. It's, uhm. It's nice.

19. Favourite snackfood / [personal profile] corvidology

Cheese! Cheese cubes (Gouda or Edam or Port Salut) and plum- or cherry tomatoes. You pop them in your mouth in turns. Eventually, the tomatoes will make your mouth sting, and you'll have to stop eating them, but until then it is pure bliss.

I'm also not averse to bell pepper or cucumber slices wrapped in cheese, but that requires slicing things which is not at all what I'm looking for when considering snack foods. I eat a lot of yoghurt as well. Too much? Probably. I probably eat too much yoghurt. Too much dairy, overall. I've switched to oat milk for most things, but oat yoghurt only works for me in smoothies. It's a work in progress.

I'm not big on crisps or popcorn or the like. For movie-watching munchies, I prefer the above-mentioned cheese combos, or something sweet.

I started watching Punisher on Netflix )

Oh boy, what a week. This weekend has been a shining beacon of hope for the past five days, beckoning with angel choirs and ephemeral light. And now it's here! Just me, my couch, and minimal expectations for a day.

I'm down to just one job now for the next eight weeks, and it is liberating. At the same time, exams are starting up at school, so next week will largely be about me trying to figure out how this school uses the Abitti program, and the week after will be about correcting 92 exams and essays. I'm less than excited, even though it'll be a relief to have this period over and done with.

Anyway, January journal! More catch up!

I did it! Four in one! That took most of evening. I still wanted to write an entry about a tabletop game I had the other day, but that will have to wait, along with entry 16. Funny, how filling a box with text can make you feel accomplished, but it does!

January Journal: Day 11 )

In other news, I'm currently on a train to Helsinki. I'm spening the next 24 hours on a ship, attending a folk music festival. In my nerdy, nerdy life, loving folk music is maybe the nerdiest thing about me. I'll try to cobble together an entry about that after the weekend.

What do you do to relax/unwind?[personal profile] machinistm

I wish I could write something healthy and cozy here. You know, like "I take walks in nature and read a book with a cup of tea." And, mind you, I enjoy both of those things and I do find them relaxing, but they're not what I do every day for relaxation purposes, oh, no. Day-to-day, post-work unwinding isn't instagram material.

I play mobile games and listen to the news. That's it. I also do it while twisting my body into some convoluted pretzel shape that messes up my shoulders and neck because I can't be assed to sit on a couch like an ordinary human. I can do it for literally hours on end if I have the time, but even when I'm in a rush, I'll do it for a few minutes during the day or before getting ready for bed. It's what I was doing before I started typing up this entry. I play game after game of something dumb like Clash Royale or Candy Crush or Sudoku, and I have a news stream or a documentary on in the background. Mostly it's Finnish news and the Young Turks podcast.

Doing this puts my mind in some sort of stand-by mode. I can forget any anxiety and stress (and haunting sense of perpetual failure), and my whole focus is blissfully on the game and on whatever information is being fed into my ear. I've a bad habit of playing on my phone while I watch tv or movies as well because I find it so damn relaxing, but it means that I miss chunks of the story since 50% focus is never as good as 100%.

I used to knit or crochet instead of play, but I've lost interest. I was never particularly good. (Why does one always have to knit two socks, anyway?)

I also love listening to audiobooks while I do my make up. I've got worse skin than most (adult acne, enlarged pores etc.), so my routine takes a fairly long time. I don't mind it, though. Applying make up is insanely relaxing. I like the process. I like the way I look when I'm done, and I like experimenting with different products. I've learned not to compare my work with that of any kind of beauty gurus. I focus on the things I think are fun, and skip everything else. I also paint my nails different colours and apply excessive amounts of glitter to them, again, while listening to audiobooks. I can spend an afternoon doing and re-doing my face. (Plus side to living in a country where darkness falls early - you can walk the dog while having painted your face in colours that would put Jem & the Holograms to shame, and literally no one will notice.)

Then, obviously, there's the run of the mill geek stuff. I play video games, and I cobble together storylines for various rpg campaigns. But I don't know if I can call it unwinding, as much as it is setting foot in a whirlpool that will suck you in for anything from 1 to 24 hours, during which time nothing else seems as important as the story you're immersed in. Fun? Absolutely. Relaxing? Not so much.

Most underrated TV show/book/comic/film you'd like more people to get into.[personal profile] falena

Wow, writing this turned out to be a lot harder than I thought it would be! Perhaps my tastes are hopelessly mainstream? My teenaged self would be terribly disappointed in me. Can I include cancelled shows?

Alright, first of all, for anyone who hasn't seen it, I warmly recommend Sense8 on Netflix. The show got cancelled this year after just two seasons, but - boy oh boy - what a couple of seasons. The show has heart. It's just heart, really. There are eight main characters from all over the world. The plot is convoluted, but the characters are captivating.

Second, I would like it if everyone else also got excited about the Magicians. I'm really invested in the world and most of the characters. It's got a university setting, it's got magic, it's got pretty people making bad choices. Hell yeah.

And, ok. Nobody throw fruit at me now, but I really like Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The visual atmosphere of both shows is really something. Teenaged romance in a faux-dark, faux-50s small town. Oh, and a murder mystery. Kind of.

In terms of books, I think more people should read Shane (1949) by Jack Schaefer. The film is considered "one of the great Westerns" but the novel is wonderful as well. It's a really easy read, and it's got a certain type of sincerity to it that I find relaxing. There's a mythical tone to the character of Shane that tickles me, and I feel strongly that the internet has really dropped the ball on failing to deliver any fanfic on the obvious attraction between Shane and Joe Starrett.

I told myself "you can mess about with DW for exactly half an hour, and then it's off to bed", so this entry may not be entirely thought out. Please forgive typos and other nonsense. Here goes!

Top 5 travel destinations - [personal profile] falena

Day 6: A movie that left a deep impression on you /[personal profile] machinistm

This is difficult! I fell down a rabbit hole thinking about questions like "well, what does it mean to leave an impression?" and "did this movie really leave an impression, or did it just resonate with whatever I was already thinking at the time?". It's impossible. If I look back on this post a week from now, I'll probably vehemently disagree with my choice now, but that's a reality we're just going to have to live with. In other words, this was a really fun prompt to write about.

A movie that moved me )

If you feel like helping me out with this January journal meme, you can leave me a comment on this post. I'm really enjoying filling this out, and the more prompts I get, the happier I am.

I didn't have a prompt for today's January journal, so I picked one from

January journal: Day 5 - Promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. )

If anyone wants to help me fill in my January journal, feel free to leave a comment here. I've got a lot of dates left to fill out, and I think it'd be more fun to do those rather than just copy from a generic challenge.
unikorento: (Default)
I saw this on [personal profile] falena' s journal, and it seemed like a fun thing to do! It'll help me get back into the swing of keeping a journal, and to write about things that you might find interesting.

So, the idea is this. Below is a list of the days of the month for January. Leave a comment with a number and a prompt, and I'll write about that thing on that day. It can be anything - fandom related, Finland related, a personal question, etc. Whatever you might want to know. Since it's already 3rd January, I'll start with tomorrow.
