Wow, writing this turned out to be a lot harder than I thought it would be! Perhaps my tastes are hopelessly mainstream? My teenaged self would be terribly disappointed in me. Can I include cancelled shows? 

 

Alright, first of all, for anyone who hasn't seen it, I warmly recommend Sense8 on Netflix. The show got cancelled this year after just two seasons, but - boy oh boy - what a couple of seasons. The show has heart. It's just heart, really. There are eight main characters from all over the world. The plot is convoluted, but the characters are captivating. 

 

Second, I would like it if everyone else also got excited about the Magicians. I'm really invested in the world and most of the characters. It's got a university setting, it's got magic, it's got pretty people making bad choices. Hell yeah. 

 

And, ok. Nobody throw fruit at me now, but I really like Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The visual atmosphere of both shows is really something. Teenaged romance in a faux-dark, faux-50s small town. Oh, and a murder mystery. Kind of. 

 

In terms of books, I think more people should read Shane (1949) by Jack Schaefer. The film is considered "one of the great Westerns" but the novel is wonderful as well. It's a really easy read, and it's got a certain type of sincerity to it that I find relaxing. There's a mythical tone to the character of Shane that tickles me, and I feel strongly that the internet has really dropped the ball on failing to deliver any fanfic on the obvious attraction between Shane and Joe Starrett.

I haven't read Shane in a long time but I remember being caught up by the book. I think the film version does a good job with the atmosphere of it but reduces it down to a unsuccessful love story.

Perhaps you could write some Shane fic for the Be the First Challenge. :D

Shane really is one of those books that it's easy to get caught up in. There's an anticipation to it from the very first pages almost, like you just know things are going to go down any minute.

Oh no. XD Eh, maybe I should? Perhaps in February when I'm supposed to be working on my thesis, I'll suddenly feel the burning need to write about pining cowboys. :D

Ah, I just looked on AO3 and there are six stories for Shane so it wouldn't qualify for the Be the First challenge which is a pity.

I loved Sense8 for the characters as well. The plot and the conspiracy were meh but those characters were just amazing. I was thrilled with the movie finale.

Me too. Even though I really wish they would have had more time. I had faith that the conspiracy plot would have started to make sense at some point!

I've been meaning to try Sense8 - it sounds so interesting. That sucks that it got cancelled, though. :( So many good shows don't get long enough.

It was a wild ride. Admittedly, some stuff was a little too on-the-nose and some stuff was really convoluted, but it was all just so worth it because it was clear that the showrunners had a vision for what they were trying to do. I think that sort of clear goal is really rare in TV, where shows have to live season-to-season.

Sense8 <3 I love that show through and through. It's a shame it was cancelled, but I will be watching what we did get over and over!

I watched the first season of The Magicians and part of season 2, or at least the first two episodes I think, but I didn't keep up with it. Perhaps I should give the show another go. I totally ship Quentin/Eliot still :D

I meant to see the x-mas special of The chilling adventures of Sabrina, but I haven't gotten around to it. The first season was a bit hit and miss for me, but I do think the show has potential.

Listen. Season 2 starts slow, but there are a couple amazing episodes in there. I personally have issues with the pacing sometimes, and the fact that the motivations of some of the characters sometimes doesn't track. (Is everyone really that magnificently self-involved? I guess they are!) But the world itself is so strong. And the visuals are so pretty!

I absolutely ship Q/E too. They would be so good for each other!

I might check it out again later. There is something (other than Q/E :D) that draws me in. The concept is wonderful and the world is very facinating.

I just feel like they fit somehow!

Sens8 was wonderful. I still can't understand why they cancelled it. :(

Wife and I just recently finished Sense8 and the finale. Very sad it ended. Recently started up on Babylon Berlin and I just got her hooked on The Good Place.
