OMG, you guys! I'M GOING TO AMERICALAND!
In June. For a month. I'm going to go to the States next June for a whole month. How awesome is that? We've been planning this trip for aaaaaages, and we weren't sure if it would happen, but we got our tax returns yesterday, and then we blew them all today on plane tickets. There! It's happening! We're going! Me, and sister and
lillannan and
nirith! (And maybe brother, if it turns out he has the money.)
The plan is to stay in New York for one week, and then rent a car for three and go... somewhere. Maybe down the East Coast. Probably.
If you who're more familiar with the area can come up with things like "oh, you should totally go see X and Y" or "do NOT go to X, whatever you do" or "event Y is taking place, you should go see!", I'd very much be interested in hearing it. Essentially we can go anywhere, as long as it's not so far that we wouldn't have time to drive back to NY at the end of it. So many choices! So little knowledge!
My life is so awesome sometimes.

Date: 2011-12-03 10:33 pm (UTC)The world is a pretty fascinating place once you pluck up the courage to go see for yourself. I very much recommend it. The States are a curiosity since they're on the one hand so far away, but on the other hand perversely familiar. There's not a kid in the western world that doesn't grow up immersed in U.S export culture. But from my experience, the last time I was there, talking to people, I felt so alien even though I knew we had a common language and a fairly similar background. It was uncanny. It is exciting! And fascinating! :D And, yeah. I'm a travel geek.
Sister made a joke that when he have to fill out this visa application - and it actually asks you ridiculous things like "have you ever participated in genocide" - we should write that our purpose is to ignite revolution, import Nordic pop-culture, and explain the concept of social democracy and a working health care/educational system, and then wait how long it takes before we get turned around and marched home by cranky fellows in suits.

Date: 2011-12-04 01:15 am (UTC)My family is from New York City, but I don't have a lot to say about it (oddly. . . ) Long Beach is fantastic on Long Island.
But, since you've expressed interest in historical things, I'd suggest you check out Colonial Williamsburg - it's in Virginia. I'll let you know that VA is hot as hell and humid in June and all the summer months.
Another beautiful place is Cape Cod, in Massachusetts. Some parts are tourist trappy, but it's got great beaches and is very, very pretty.
I live in TX (the only liberal part of TX, Austin) and if you're flying into NY, I'd suggest you limit yourself to things in the Northeast. For example, it would take you 36 hours to drive to Austin from NYC. Distances are decieving, and there is a lot of traffic in the Northeast.
My family currently resides in Pittsburgh, which is also very rich in history, if not the most beautiful part of the country. Gettsyburg is huge on the American Civil War stuff, but Virginia has swatch of that stuff too.

Ooh! Thanks! That definitely sounds good. And Cape Cod. See, this is exactly our problem. So much to choose from, it's hard to even know where to start looking. Distances really are problematic. At the end of the day, we won't even know how fast we'll be moving until we're actually there. I want to go far enough south to see alligators, but so far it's a three-against-one vote, so we'll see what happens. :P

Date: 2011-12-05 03:30 pm (UTC)This is just my opinion, but if you're going to be on the East coast in the summer, you have to check out a boardwalk at the beach. (I love boardwalks & the beach.) There are a lot of pick from. I know there are multiple beaches with boardwalks in New Jersey, which pretty close to New York. Atlantic City is one of the most famous, and also has casinos, if you or your travel mates are into gambling. There's also Wildwood and Ocean City in New Jersey, and a few others.
If you go further south, there's also a very large boardwalk & beach in Ocean City, Maryland. That's where we vacationed when I was growing up; though I will admit, Ocean City, Maryland has gotten pretty darned expensive! :-( So you might be better off in New Jersey.
