Sweet!!

My family is from New York City, but I don't have a lot to say about it (oddly. . . ) Long Beach is fantastic on Long Island.

But, since you've expressed interest in historical things, I'd suggest you check out Colonial Williamsburg - it's in Virginia. I'll let you know that VA is hot as hell and humid in June and all the summer months.

Another beautiful place is Cape Cod, in Massachusetts. Some parts are tourist trappy, but it's got great beaches and is very, very pretty.

I live in TX (the only liberal part of TX, Austin) and if you're flying into NY, I'd suggest you limit yourself to things in the Northeast. For example, it would take you 36 hours to drive to Austin from NYC. Distances are decieving, and there is a lot of traffic in the Northeast.

My family currently resides in Pittsburgh, which is also very rich in history, if not the most beautiful part of the country. Gettsyburg is huge on the American Civil War stuff, but Virginia has swatch of that stuff too.
