So, I recently added some new friends. HELLO!

I'm terrible at introduction posts. They get long and rambly, and don't usually end up being particularly truthful, so I figured I would do this another way. I've also been waiting for an occasion to do this meme I came across over on [livejournal.com profile] doriana186's journal, so... Two birds, one stone, right?

BASICS

Name: Jutta

Age: 26 27

Birthday: 30.9.

Location: Finland - west or south-east, depending on time of year.

Gender and/or sex: woman

Sexual orientation: Yes, I suppose I have one of those. Tends to vary, though. Straight-ish right now, I guess.

Political leanings: I don't really have one party picked out as "my party". I'll vote according to which party has the best plan concerning the issues I'm interested in. Being a student, the Green Party has had my back fairly often - but the part of me that will always be first and foremost from a rural area doesn't feel very represented by them. So it depends. In broad strokes, I could say I drift on the center-left scale. (From a European/Nordic POV, mind. On the US scale, I'd probably land two steps left of the leftest point available.)
I'm a little bit suspicious of anyone too engrossed in just one point of view, but on the other hand, people who don't vote at all are a serious pet peeve of mine. I'm no kind of activist myself, and I can understand not-voting as a political statement on its own, but I can't abide apathy/a grown person somehow thinking that it magically doesn't concern them.

Occupation: Student, with a side-order of various summer jobs.

Religious/spiritual beliefs (or if there's a lack thereof?): I don't really know. I can't honestly claim a belief, but I like the idea of having one. Agnostic? Secular humanist? I do officially belong to the Lutheran protestant church, but mostly out of loyalty to now-deceased grandparents.

Heritage/ancestry: 1/8 Finland-Swede, 1/8 Unknown, 50% Karelian, 100% Finnish.

FAVOURITES

Bands/musicians: Too many to mention! But right now? - Florence & the Machine, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Fiona Apple, Led Zeppelin, Dream Theater, Apulanta ... *digs toe in sand* ... Foreigner. Metal-y/blues-y/melodic stuff. And classic rock *g*

Books: Good Omens by Neil Gaiman. M is for Magic by Neil Gaiman. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke. A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway.

TV shows/movies: SUPERNATURAL, Buffy, Dr Who and Firefly are in the "all time top" category, but other than that there's a lot more. HIMYM, Community, True Blood, Star Trek, Dexter, Sons of Anarchy... I watch a lot of shows.
Favourite movies are almost impossible to pick though - it depends too much on the day. The standard geek films of course - old Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Nightmare Before Christmas. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! And I'm a sucker for super hero films. And Tarantino. And Robert Rodriguez.

Places:
- End of the little pier at the lake at my parents' place.
- The porch at my parents' place.
- My "secret spot" on the rock in the forest by my parents' place.
- Anywhere I can see the Alps.
- The couch here at the apartment, when I don't have to go anywhere the next day.

People: Blah, I don't like the thought of picking out favourite people. I will be vague instead! My family, my siblings especially. My friends - both in IRL and online. <3

Foods: I have a serious sweet tooth. Nothing compares to the yummy of cookie dough or cake batter. Cheesecake (American style). Brownies (American style.) Gelato & granita. Favorite savory dishes include, but are not limited to: Macaroni casserole. Fresh mashed potatoes with onion and meatballs, or chanterelle mushrooms. Karjalanpiirakka.

Philosophers/poets/artists/authors/scientists/historical figures/etc.: Really? That's a lot of categories in one question. But I'll take it, because it saves me the trouble of having to answer a question by just admitting that I really don't have any kind of favourite philosopher. Would be great to have one, would make me feel all sorts of clever, but no. I do however like saying "Kants kategoriska imperativ" several times really fast in any conversation about morality.
Neil Gaiman is my hands-down favourite author, and as far as artists go, I have a thing for Dalí and Patrick Woodroffe. (Easy to pick. My knowledge of art is tiny. Teeny tiny.)
Picking a favourite poet is a little bit impossible - like with movies, it depends very much on the day. Charles Baudelaire and Edith Södergran are ones I've liked enough to buy, so maybe those.

HOBBIES/LIFESTYLE

Do you write?: Yup. Not quite daily, but close enough. I write fanfic, or fic relating to some of the tabletop RPGs I'm in, or just random bits of text in notebooks. And I write in this journal, of course, which was maybe not what was being asked, but I think it counts as a creative thing.

Are you an artist?: Nope. I would love to be a performing story-teller, though. That'd be awesome.

Do you play any instruments?: I play the piano, rather poorly, but enough to jam.

Do you do any sports/physical activities?: I run and I go to the gym, but I don't do either of them regularly. I think it's been almost six months since I last did any sports in an "I'm going to do sports now" kind of way. Life during the summer at my parents' place was pretty physical just because, though, so I'll count that. So - physical activities: throwing and stacking 8kg bales of hay.

Do you drink?: Yes. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I like a buzz, I even like being just too damned drunk to care what anyone thinks, but only in good company.

Do you smoke?: Nope.

Are you a vegetarian/vegan?: I was a vegetarian for several years, through senior high school to just a few years ago. I think I kept calling myself a vegetarian for a long time even after it wasn't true anymore. I'm not sure when exactly it changed, but there you go.
I'm not opposed to eating animals as food. I do however think that the way animals are treated in the meat industry is a terrible thing that shouldn't be allowed, all the way from transportation to the way the slaughter houses themselves operate. So I support vegetarian/veganism, and any and all demands that animals destined for slaughter were treated as living beings (i.e they feel things like pain, starvation, and fear) as opposed to commodities.

Which languages do you know?: Finnish, Swedish, English and French. I have the basics for Italian, Estonian, Russian and German kicking around in the back of my head, but I can't claim to really know any of them.

Do you like computer stuff/graphics/coding?: Nope. But I do love the fact that computers exist! And I love having one that works <3

Do you attend concerts? + Last band(s) you saw: I do! Not as often as I'd like, though. The last gig I saw (that I planned to see) was Apulanta in Tampere - though later that same weekend, we ended up at sister's favorite bar, and there was a gig there for a band called Mockshot. We stuck around for it because a) it was free and b) it really is a pretty cool bar. The band itself was a little meh.

What are you passionate about?: Lots of things! I'm easily excited, but sticking to things has never been my strong suit. Passion, I suppose, requires me to be excited about something for a longer period of time?
I think... stupid as it may sound, I'm passionate about dog training and canine behavior in general. I take it seriously. I know (maybe a lot) more about it than the average person, and I have lots of opinions. It's something I've been doing since I was 12, so I think its safe to say I'm passionate, since I'm still not bored by it. Ah, and travel. I really, really love to travel. (Relating to this, questions of identity are fascinating.) Maybe blogging, too? I've been writing down whatever goes on in my head and posting it on the internet for almost 8 years at this point. (Ok, so maybe that doesn't equal being passionate - but maybe that's just because I've never had to argue with someone about "the virtues of blogging". I'd be a passionate defender if someone challenged its awesomeness.)

Where do you want to travel?: EVERYWHERE! I want to do a proper trip through France, just France, from Bretagne all the way to Côte d'Azur. I want to see la Réunion. I want to see the States, and actually live there for a bit. (And then I want to write a comparative essay where I figure it all out.) And I want to see Québec. And I want to see New Zealand. And West Africa. I want to see all of silly old Europe, the megalopolises and the hidden away villages. And Israel. And fucking Bruges. And the U.K. (I've never actually been to Ireland, and I was so not done with Scotland yet.) Ah, and Norway. I've never seen the best parts of Norway. Äh, really, I don't think there's too many places where you could go "Jutta, want to come with me to X" and I'd say "No".

Where have you already been?: The ones I've seen as an "adult": Germany, France, Austria and Switzerland. Luxembourg. Estonia. Sweden. Norway. Russia (Karelia & Murmansk & St Petersburg). Denmark. USA (Arizona, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico.) England. Scotland. Egypt. Italy. Hungary. Latvia.
The list goes on if I count the places my parents took us as kids, but I remember them mostly in bits and pieces, through the eyes of a child. I have the experiences, but not necessarily the context. E.g the fact that I remember being in a big city and playing with a girl in a frilly dress in a park, and then having porridge and petting a stray dog (which I knew I wasn't allowed to do, really, and got into trouble for later), doesn't really count as being able to say "I've seen Prague".

Accomplishments?: ... Uhm. I... Nope, nada. I have accomplished very little. Or I am not accomplished, period. My biggest hope right now, is that after Christmas I can come back to this entry and edit this answer.

Goals?: Short term? Long term? Concerning life in general? They tend to change. I want to graduate, and be proud of whatever thesis I end up writing. And then I'd like to feel independent.

Anything else you'd like to share.: IT'S MY BIRTHDAY TODAY! \o/

ETCETERA

Recommend a song/TV show/book/anything like that.:
If I were to recommend a book off the top of my head for my entire flist, I'd say Naïve. Super by Erlend Loe. It's delightful, it's translated to lots of languages, and it's a quick read. If you didn't like it, you haven't really wasted more than a day out of your life. But I can't imagine why you wouldn't like it. As I said - it's delightful. I wanted to recommend a song too, but there were too many to choose from and I couldn't decide on one. Would anyone like Armo by Apulanta?

Do you expect your LJ friends to comment regularly?: Not on every entry or anything like that, no, and I certainly don't keep tabs or hold it against anyone if they don't, absolutely not. I can get pathetically comment-shy myself sometimes, so I get that there's a threshold.
I use my dw/lj as a social media, though, and I want to get to know the people whose lives I read about, that is why I comment, even if it is sometimes just to say something slightly inane. If we don't comment, we never actually interact, and an element of the experience is lost. So, okay, no, I don't expect anyone to comment regularly, but I do appreciate it.

Links to your other blogs/tumblr/etc.: I... don't have any? I have Google+ and Facebook though, even if I don't use them very much :P If someone decides they want to know me there, I can give the link.

What is your AIM screenname?: Don't have AIM. Have Skype though - surku_von_valitus

Is it weird that if I had traveled to as many places as you have, I'd feel accomplished? I dunno, the fact that you've been able to see so much should count for something. And you can speak 4 languages!!! Feel proud of yourself, you've done good :DD

And happy birthday!! I hope that it's a good one~

Firstly, happy belated birthday! :) I hope you had a lovely day.

Secondly, I think you've accomplished plenty already in your life -- much traveling and learning. :-)

And really, we should always have things to be learning and accomplishing; I mean, it's life, and life should have goals. I don't understand this whole "I want to accomplish X, Y, and Z by the time I'm 30." Really? And then what? You're not going to do anything for the next 60 years?!?! Anyways. I'll get down off my rant-box. LOL.
