.mts is the type of file that my handy-cam produces. Before I started playing around with recordings, I'd never come across them either. They play well enough on my dad's windows media player, but on VLC and just about all the other players, they jam a lot, so it turned out to be necessary to convert them. So, yeah, I don't think they're very common at all.
